Jan’s Web Services in Detail:

I’ve installed hundreds of WordPress sites, written several plugins, and made lots of adjustments to themes, and even created a theme from scratch. I love being a designer sand have a slightly different perspective from many, especially when it comes to converting code like  HTML and CSS into a theme. Installing WordPress onto your website takes very little time in fact you really can have a basic functioning site up in a few minutes) though it may take a bit longer if you’ve never dealt with coding like PHPMyAdmin or the DB Wizard in your hosting CPanel -control panel or FTP. Adding or changing content is very simple; there is no code, HTML, CSS, etc to mess with, and is almost self explanatory. I’ve put lots of non technical people on WP installations, and I can usually get them through the basics in about an hour  including showing them how to find free or premium themes and install them. Configuring settings and extending the site with plug-ins can take a bit more time, but overall it’s still a fairly simple process to manage, and pretty hard to break or screw up. Building a theme is where you’ll have to spend the most time IMO. Different parts of the page are built by different PHP files (footer, header, body, etc), so you have to get your head around all the different little chunks of HTML scattered around in the various files.

Of course different designers handle the situation differently so it can vary a bit from theme to theme. If you’ve never dealt with a system like this before, you may want to pick apart a theme, and even check out one of the many “how to build a WordPress theme” tutorials that are floating around the web to get a gauge on how long  it takes.

What Our Clients Have Said

WordPress Development Project – October 2011:

” From our first call to Jan and all throughout our working with her she has been professional, on time, high energy, funny, extremely gracious, and gone way beyond what we thought we would receive in hiring her to work with us.  We are creating a new business from scratch, and there are so many questions to be answered when undertaking a project like this..  But Jan has and continues to be patient, prudent, reliable, and took the time to make sure we understood all going on and has helped us create a fantastic website and marketing platform to sell our product.  We are still meeting to perform  final tweaks to our website but are so happy with her fantastic work .

We plan to continue to use Jan to monitor and maintain our website going forward. We got SO much for our money, and you could not ask for a better person to work with.  Especially if you are on a budget and trying to get up and running.  You won’t be sorry she is a true professional and a wonderful person. ”

HTML Dog Training Website and Lead Generating Design – November 2011

” I knew immediately that I would be able to communicate with Jan, no matter how many problems we ran into.  First it was the Holidays. She still kept up with her business.  Then there were computer problems. We hired an outside Company to make sure there were no glitches from that!  Then, in order to have pictures, Jan had to get pictures from Facebook.(  A relative had so generously put on. Thank you Checkie!) Then, Jan took our information from my daughter’s business card and flyer for the print. Jan added features that I had no idea she was capable of doing. I think she is a genius! She admits she is a n***, but talks like your best friend. She never makes you feel stupid or loses patience with you! It  was a lot of work to get the final product, through no fault of hers.  The Cable Provider has blocks intermittently on email.  It caused extreme hardship, but Jan took it in her own hands to solve the problem!. She also added more features that would benefit my daughter’s business with no extra charge. I highly recommend this lady and wish she live nearby…….. just because i became very fond of her. Don’t be afraid to go out of town to get a Web Design. Go to Jan in Oregon.  She is the best! ”

On Exceeding Our Client’s Expectations

” Jan did a fantastic job for us and got us out of a real bind. Our previous Web Designer just disappeared and left us without a functioning website. In our line of work it is critical that we provide the potential customer with pictures of our finished product on our website and it was not functioning due to lack of attention. Nur went beyond my expectations and I really felt that I had her full attention at all times. I look forward to a long working relationship with Design by Jan ”

We will provide back up services when designing in WordPress and ensure the latest versions of this platform are used. We try and maintain regular communication with our customers before, during and after the web project is commenced. We value your feedback and encourage Jan’s Web Service customers to contact us at any point in the process to discuss any issues or concerns that you may have.

Designs | Portfolio | Musings on Finding Work

I decided to start making a portfolio of my website designs. I started by making a site about the burial of a celebrity in our village (after learning HTML and reading books). Then i received commercial offers to do a site for them for a
limited price – i made sure that i was able to use as much freedom in the site design as possible – so that it is your design, in your style. I next made a digital portfolio of creative things you have done, inclusive the sites i made (not just links, but screenshots or have the sites appear in new windows).

I think this was a good start to get a job: portfolio and real life experience. The best thing is making a site for somebody else. If i like a particular business and they are not on the Internet yet (and it could be useful for them), i do the following: create a site for that business. Put it on a server (on a safe spot where nobody else can find it), go to that company and tell them how Internet can improve their business/image etc. I explain that i needed some hands on experience since i am starting out and that i made something for them. I explain what i have done and why. I do not ask any money – it is just for my portfolio. I then get their opinion. Do they want to publish this site on the Internet? Would they want some changes? What kind of changes and why? If they do like it, i will then publish it free on the Internet. If they don’t like it -too bad.

Changes are that they like the idea. Then it is time to negotiate, make small adjustments for free, major adjustments for a small fee. This is not the way to make money, that part comes much later. The most important part is that you get experience and that you have names of happy customers to add to my cv. Chances are that from that point on i will get mouth to mouth advertising – and you can increase the price of course when there are more requests for sites.
I am very selective in choosing a company/shop. Take one which has not the budget to have a site professionally build. And i make a professional site of it. I try different kinds of fields – to gain experience (again) but also to add versatality to my portfolio.

A few examples from clients all around the world:

I did a site for a non profit group in Adelaide, Australia. They wanted a simple site that would tell people about their charity and how it helps  people in Melbourne and Adelaide. It was a simple 3 page site with a few images and contact details for people wanting to get in touch and contribute to their fund or volunteer (i love volunteering myself!). From this came a job to do a site for an Adelaide solar panels company that installs solar power in Adelaide homes. The client, Mike had 15 years experience in solar power in Adelaide and had installed over 1000 solar panel systems in Adelaide, so  knew a lot about renewable energy, solar power and solar panels installation around South Australia, but nothing about web design! So i created a simple website, wordpress based that was an excellent information site for people in Adelaide wanting solar power and solar rebate information, without being to ‘in your face’. Feed back from Mike is that the solar power Adelaide information website design has been very popular and people have told mike that they have a better understanding of South Australian solar rebates and solar panels in Adelaide. Very gratifying to hear – i have a strong ‘bent’ towards green, renewable energy and am thinking about solar panel installation myself now!
